about
Sallie Mizzle (The Student Loan Song) is the latest single from interdisciplinary artist Lisa E. Harris, available for purchase on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms February 14, 2021.
This ode to the educational loan monster Sallie Mae is an anthem that Harris hopes will get the world singing and dancing to the tune of loan forgiveness. At the close of 2020, Americans owed nearly $2 trillion in student loans, with Black women holding the highest student loan debt than any other racial or ethnic group.
“When I was a 17 years old girl in Texas, with dreams of going to New York City to become an opera singer, I was soon approached with options to help pay for my education and make my dream a reality. No one told me I would be literally fighting an uphill battle of interest rates, credit devastation and outlandish debt for decades to come. The system is designed to intimidate, enslave and perpetually fail us,” says Harris. Sallie Mizzle (The Student Loan Song) is the first single and video from Lisa E.’s upcoming album
“Life, And That” to be released Summer 2021 independently through Studio Enertia.

SALLIE MIZZLE (THE STUDENT LOAN SONG)
BY LISA E. HARRIS
I MET THIS GIRL SALLIE MIZZLE
SALLIE MIZZLE IS A LOAN SHARK
AND SHE CALLS ME IN THE MORNING
EVERYDAY SHE CALLIN’ AFTER DARK.
WHEN I WAS YOUNG I SAID “SALLIE,
CAN YOU HELP ME BE A SINGER?”
I SAID “ I GOT SOME TALENT. TO A STAR,
I’M A DEAD RINGER.”
SALLIE SAID “SURE.” I SAID “ THANK YOU, SALLIE.
WHEN I MAKE IT ONE DAY, I’M GON’ REPAY YOU.”
AND THEN I SHOOK HER HAND AND WALKED AWAY
AND SALLIE WHISPERED, “WE GON’ RAPE YOU.”
YOU SEE, SALLIE INVENTED THIS BUSINESS
OF LOANIN’ MONEY TO THE WISHFUL THINKIN’.
SHE GIVIN’ BUSTED LIFEJACKETS
AND SHE KNOW THE BOAT IS CLEARLY SINKIN’.
I’M LIKE SALLIE MAY I
PAY YOU ANOTHER DAY?
PLEASE DON’T TRY TO
TAKE WE LIFE AWAY
WE LIKE SALLIE MAY WE
PAY YOU BACK ANOTHER DAY?
PLEASE DON’T TRY TO
TAKE WE LIFE AWAY. WE LIKE
TEN YEARS LATER I’M SORRY.
I KNOW IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME.
AND NOT ANSWERIN’ MY PHONE
WHEN YOU CALL ME IS OUTTA LINE.
BUT I GOT THIS PLAN O SALLIE MIZZLE.
I’M GONNA WRITE A SONG THAT’S REALLY HOT.
I’LL DEDICATE IT TO YOU I’LL MAKE THE MONEY
GIVE YOU ALL I GOT!
RIGHT NOW EVERYBODY BROKE (WE BROKE)
WE BEEN HURTIN’ SO BAD IT’S NO JOKE
AND I STILL HAD TO PAY THE DOCTOR
WHEN MY PAPPY HAD A STROKE (OW! OW!)
SALLIE STILL PUTTING ON THE PRESSURE
SHE SAID, “FUCK THAT TALK ABOUT RECESSION!
EITHER WAY, YOU LOSE. YOU VERSUS MONEY,
THAT IS THE FINAL LESSON.”
I’M LIKE SALLIE MAY I
PAY YOU ANOTHER DAY?
PLEASE DON’T TRY TO
TAKE WE LIFE AWAY
WE LIKE SALLIE MAY WE
PAY YOU BACK ANOTHER DAY?
PLEASE DON’T TRY TO
TAKE WE LIFE AWAY. WE LIKE
IM LIKE, SALLIE MAY I LIVE MY LIFE
WITHOUT YOU WAITING WITH A KNIFE
TO CUT OUT MY INTEGRITY AND HEART?
WITH ALL SINCERITY, WHEN I WAS YOUNG
YOU LOANED ME MONEY THAT YOU NEVER
HAD YOURSELF BUT YOU WAS BIG AND I WAS SMALL
AND THERE’S YOUR STRATEGY FOR WEALTH.
BEAT UP ALL THE LITTLE GUYS AND STEAL THEIR LUNCH
AND FEED ‘EM LIES. I’M BEGGIN’ SALLIE, PLEASE!
Spoken:
OH COME ON SALLIE, GIMME A BREAK GIRL.
YOU KNOW I’M GOOD FOR IT.
YOU KNOW I GOT YOU.
SALLIE… LISA… E.
OH COME ON SALLIE.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO ME LIKE THAT, GIRL….

Beautiful music for our challenging times. Unique voices like Mitchell and Harris provide what little hope is possible. I love how, in their unique way, they incorporate, along with so much else, the spirit of Sun Ra, one of my primary musical heros. And it’s interesting that I used to argue that there were places that the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) could go that the western flute couldn’t. But after hearing Nicole Mitchell’s work on this recording I’m a little less confident abo kyoung21b
